Wigwam

In 1905, Herbert Chesebro started the Hand Knit Hosiery Company in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This company specialized in manufacturing wool products, such as socks, sweaters, caps, hoods, mittens, even bathing suits. During the first half of the 20th century Wigwam was a major producer of socks for the American soldiers that fought in both World War I and World War II. Starting in the 1950’s, the Hand Knit Hosiery Company focused more on leisure wear. It was during this time that the president, Robert Chesebro Sr., introduced colored thread into the toes of the socks making it easier to match up pairs. The popularity from this resulted in Robert Chesebro Sr. being inducted into the Sporting Goods Industry’s Hall of Fame.

The name was changed from Hand Knit Hosiery to Wigwam Mills, Inc. officially in 1957. Over the last 50 years Wigwam has produced high quality socks used both for leisure and for athletics. They are proud sponsors for the Ironman Triathlon competitions throughout the United States, and the Wigwam/Ultimax Mountain Bike Challenge in Wisconsin.
